Appendix F: Glossary
Access Code
A personal access code entered upon execution of the DLS-1 software. There are up
to sixteen access codes supported.

See Appendix B.
Baud Rate
Used to measure the speed of a modem.
Call Back
Refers to the ability of the panel to call back the operator before uploading or
downloading may take place. This is a security feature which ensures that only the
authorized downloading computer may access the panel.
Call Back Number
The telephone number the panel will call if the Call Back feature is enabled.
COM Port
Short for communications port, which is used by the computer to communicate with an
external device, such as a modem or serial printer. Com ports are considered serial devices.
Customer Work File
The file pertaining to a particular panel, sometimes referred to as a Customer Account.
DIP Switch
An acronym meaning Dual In-line Package. It is a series of switches used to configure
a modem.
DOS File name
The 8 character name and optional 3 character extension given to a file to distinguish
it from other files.
DTMF
Initials for Dual Tone Multi-Frequency, commonly known as “Touch Tone”. DTMF is
a method of telephone dialling.
EEPROM
An acronym meaning Electronically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory.
Enter / Return
These two words are used to describe a key on the computer keyboard. On most IBM
PC compatible keyboards, Enter is usually used, but they are interchangeable.
Floppy
This term is another name for a computer diskette. Sometimes called “floppy”
diskettes, the term refers to the fact that the diskette can bend. Both 3.5" and 5.25"
diskettes are considered a floppy for the purpose of this manual.
Forced Answer
This function forces the panel to seize the phone line for the purpose of downloading
with an on-site computer (PC4020, PC4010 and PC3000 only). In the PC3000, Section
28 (Auxiliary Input), number 4 refers to the Forced Answer option. For the PC4020 /
PC4000, one of the zone type selections is “Forced Answer“.
Hard Drive
This name describes a certain type of storage media used by a computer. It is sometimes
called a “fixed disk”, because it is not removable from the computer like a diskette is.
